The A. M. Byers Company, Inc. was founded in 1864 (incorporated 1878) by Alexander M. Byers, William Graff and Jacob Reese in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Its industry was steel and wrought iron pipe and its headquarters remained in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

In 1956, the General Tire & Rubber Company acquired most 81% of A. M. Byers stock. After trying to diversify in the 1960s, the company and operations were slowly phased out. Its last plant in Ambridge, Pennsylvania shut its doors in 1969. In 1970, A. M. Byers was entirely acquired by General Tire and was merged into the firm.
