The American Chemical Paint Company was founded on June 8, 1914 by James H. Gravell in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Its industry was agricultural chemicals and paint and its headquarters were in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1914-1923), Ambler, Pennsylvania (1923-1980) and Madison Heights, Michigan (1980-2000).

In 1977, the company was acquired by the Union Carbide Corporation, and in 1980 by Henkel AG & Company, operated by its Cognis Corporation subsidiary. In 1987, AmChem was merged into the Parker Chemical Company, a firm previously acquired by Henkel, resulting in the Parker+Amchem division. The operation lasted until 1997 when it was consolidated into Henkel.
