Armour & Company was founded in 1867 by brothers Philip D., Herman O. and Joseph F. Armour in Chicago, Illinois. Its industry was meatpacking and pharmaceuticals and its headquarters were in Chicago, Illinois (1867-1971) and Phoenix, Arizona (1971-1983).

Armour & Co. was acquired by the Greyhound Corporation in 1970. It was sold to ConAgra Brands, Inc. in 1983 and retained as a brand. ConAgra sold off its refrigerated meats unit including the "Armour" brand to Smithfield Foods, Inc. in 2006. ConAgra still markets the "Armour Star" brand through its canned meat division. The Armour pharmaceutical unit is owned by Forest Laboratories, Inc.
