The Betts Machine Company was founded in 1861 (incorporated February 5, 1879) by brothers Edward T. and Alfred Betts in Wilmington, Delaware. Its industry was planing and boring machinery and its headquarters remained in Wilmington, Delaware. In 1917, the firm was acquired by Du Pont.

A new Betts Machine Company was established in 1918 in Rochester, New York, purchasing the patterns and patents of the former Wilmington firm. In 1922, the company was consolidated with the Colburn Machine Tool Company, Hilles & Jones Company, Modern Tool Company and Newton Machine Tool Works, forming the Consolidated Machine Tool Corporation.
