
The Cities Service Company was founded on September 2, 1910 by Henry L. Doherty in Grand Forks, North Dakota to take over the Denver Gas & Electric Company, Empire District Electric Company and Spokane Gas & Electric Company. Its industry is oil and gasoline and its headquarters were in New York City, New York (1910-1974), Tulsa, Oklahoma (1974-2004), and Houston, Texas (2004-present).
In 1982 the company was acquired by the Occidental Petroleum Corporation, and again by the Southland Corporation in 1983. Half of the company was sold to PDV America, Inc., an American subsidiary of Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. in 1986, and the remainder in 1990.
