The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company, also known as The Illuminating Company, was founded on September 29, 1892 by Charles F. Brush in Cleveland, Ohio following a merger between the Brush Electric Light & Power Company and Cleveland Electric Light Company. Its industry is electric utility services and its headquarters have remained in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1986, the firm merged with the Toledo Edison Company, forming the Centerior Energy Corporation. It became a wholly-owned subsidiary of the FirstEnergy Corporation following its inception in 1997.
