Clyde Iron Works, Inc. was founded on October 21, 1889 by Charles P. Craig, James Cash, Jay W. Anderson, Daniel B. Cash and John G. Williams in Duluth, Minnesota. Its industry was steel and heavy machinery and its headquarters remained in Duluth, Minnesota.
The Northwestern Manufacturing Company was formed in 1899 and acquired Clyde Iron Works in 1901, adopting the latter firm's name. In 1944 the firm was acquired by the Barium Steel Corporation. It became a subsidiary of the Republic Industrial Corporation in 1957 and was acquired by the Vare Corporation in 1967. Clyde was sold to the Microdot Company in 1969. It was purchased by Dombrico, Inc. in 1973 and placed in its equipment systems division. The firm was acquired by the American Hoist & Derrick Company in 1986 and the Duluth plant was shut down. Operations were merged with the marine division of American Hoist, forming the AmClyde Engineering Products Company, based from St. Paul, Minnesota.
In 2010, the former Duluth plant opened as a restaurant and entertainment venue, called Clyde Iron Works, and is owned and operated by Alessandro Giuliani.
