The Congoleum Corporation was founded on October 29, 1902 by James Buchanan and Frank B. Foster in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Its industry is flooring and its headquarters were in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1902-1924), Kearny, New Jersey (1924-1989) and Merserville, New Jersey (1989-present).

In 1909, the firm was acquired by the Barrett Manufacturing Company. In 1919, Congoleum acquired its own stakes from Barrett. In 1924, Congoleum acquired the Nairn Linoleum Company and made its headquarters in Kearny, New Jersey. In 1968, it became a subsidiary of Bath Industries. It was acquired by the Fibic Corporation in 1980. Six years later, it was sold to Hillside Industries. Congoleum went public again in 1995.
