
The Electric Controller & Manufacturing Company, or EC&M, was founded on August 23, 1889 by Charles H. Wellman in Cleveland, Ohio. Its industry was control apparatus, safety devices and industrial magnets and its headquarters remained in Cleveland, Ohio. On December 28, 1955, the firm was acquired and merged with the Square D Company. It operated as a division in Cleveland until at least 1960, when its product line was consolidated with other Square D operations.
On August 18, 2003, the Electric Controller & Manufacturing Company, LLC was established to take over Square D/Schneider Electric's crane business, and a facility was occupied in St. Matthews, South Carolina. Square D had been acquired by the Schneider Electric Company in 1991. In 2015, EC&M was acquired by Hubbell Industrial Controls Inc., a subsidiary of Hubbell Inc. A year later, its operations were moved to Archdale, North Carolina.
