The Exolon Company was founded on February 11, 1914 by Edward R. Speare in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Its industry was abrasives and its headquarters were in Buffalo, New York (1914-1984) and Tonawanda, New York (1984-2008).

In 1984, the ESK Corporation was merged into the firm and ownership of Exolon was transferred to the Wacker Chemical Corporation, and later to Wacker Chemicals (USA), Inc. in 1995. In 2001 it was acquired by the Washington Mills Company. It shut down in 2008.
