The American Rolling Mill Company was founded on December 2, 1899 by a group of investors led by George M. Verity in Trenton, New Jersey. Its industry was metal products and its headquarters were in Middletown, Ohio (1900-1985), Parsippany, New Jersey (1985-1993), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (1993-1995) and back to Middletown from 1995 to 1999. In 1978, the company changed its name to Armco, Inc. to reflect its non-steel operations it had acquired and its steel mills were placed in a newly-formed group called the Eastern Steel Division.
In 1989, the company entered into a partnership with the Kawasaki Steel Corporation allowing use of several of its production facilities to Armco in exchange for a large stake in the company. The Armco Steel Company L.P. (later known as AK Steel Holding Corporation) was formed as a result of the merger, and it acquired Armco Inc. in 1999.
