The Benjamin Electric Manufacturing Company was founded on April 10, 1901 by Reuben B. Benjamin in Chicago, Illinois. Its industry was commercial lighting equipment, wiring devices, electrical specialties and radio parts and its headquarters were in Chicago, Illinois (1901-1929) and Des Plaines, Illinois (1929-1958). In 1958, the company was acquired by Thomas Industries, Inc. and operated as a division until 1963 when operations were moved to Sparta, Tennessee.
