The Buick Motor Company was founded in 1899 by David D. Buick in Detroit, Michigan. Its industry is automotive and its headquarters were in Detroit, Michigan (1899-1903), Flint, Michigan (1903-1998) and back to Detroit (1998-present). The Buick company was incorporated on May 19, 1903 and was acquired by Flint Wagon Works the same year. In November 1904, William C. Durant acquired Buick and Flint Wagon Works. Durant established the General Motors Company in 1908 with Buick as an automobile brand.

From 1923 until 1942, Buicks sold in Canada were called McLaughlin-Buicks and were sold by General Motors of Canada, Ltd.
