The Gates Rubber Company was founded in 1902 by V. K. Sturges in Denver, Colorado. The firm was sold to Charles Gates, Sr. in 1912. Its industry is power transmission equipment (originally tires and tire-soles) and its headquarters have remained in Denver, Colorado. In 1996, the company was acquired by Tomkins plc. In 2010, Tomkins along with Gates were purchased by the Onex Corporation and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. The company was acquired by the Blackstone Group, Inc. in 2014.
