The Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company was founded in 1822 by Christopher & John Foulks in St. Louis, Missouri. Its industry is tobacco and its headquarters are in Durham, North Carolina. It was acquired by the Union Tobacco Company in 1899 which in turn was acquired by the American Tobacco Company a few months later. In 1911, it became private. In 1977 it merged with the Diversified Products Corporation. It was acquired by Grand Metropolitan PLC in 1980, then by Bennett S. LeBow in 1986, making it a subsidiary of his Brooke Group Ltd.

In 1976, the Liggett Group, Inc. was set up as a holding company. In 1990, the company separated into two subsidiary companies: Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company (which changed its name to Liggett Group Inc.) and Impel Marketing Inc. Liggett Group, Inc. changed its name to Brooke Group Ltd. In 2000, the company changed its name to Vector Group Ltd.
