The Link-Belt Company, doing business as Link-Belt Excavators, was founded on May 28, 1906 by William D. Ewart following the consolidation of the Link-Belt Machinery Company, Link-Belt Engineering Company, and William D. Ewart Manufacturing Company. Those firms were established by William Ewart in 1880, 1888, and 1875 respectively. Its industry is excavators and equipment and its headquarters were in Chicago, Illinois (1906-1998) and Lexington, Kentucky (1998-present).
In 1967, the firm was purchased by the FMC Corporation. In 1986, the Link-Belt Construction Equipment Company was formed as a joint venture between FMC and Sumitomo Heavy Industries. The excavator product line was spun off Link-Belt to the LBX Company, a joint-venture company formed by Sumitomo and the Case Corporation. In 2010, Sumitomo acquired full ownership of LBX.
