Mallinckrodt Chemical Works was founded in 1867 (incorporated April 18, 1882) by brothers Gustav, Edward Sr. and Otto Mallinckrodt in St. Louis, Missouri. Its industry was specialty pharmaceuticals and medical imaging products and its headquarters remained in St. Louis, Missouri.
In 1982, the firm was acquired by Avon Products, Inc., and sold to the International Minerals & Chemical Corporation in 1986. In 1989, the firm was split into two companies: Mallinckrodt Medical Inc. (successor) and Mallinckrodt Specialty Chemicals Inc. In 1998, Mallinckrodt Medical was merged into its parent, then known as Mallinckrodt, Inc.
