Merck & Company, Inc. was founded in 1891 by George Merck as an American subsidiary of Merck KGaA, a German chemical firm founded in 1668. During World War I, the company was expropriated by the U.S. government, and established as its own independent firm in 1917. Its industry is pharmaceuticals and its headquarters were in New York City, New York (1891-1926), Rahway, New Jersey (1926-1992), Readington, New Jersey (1992-2014) and Kenilworth, New Jersey (2014-present).

In 1953, it merged with Sharp & Dohme, Inc. The combined company kept the trade name Merck in the United States and Canada, and as Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) outside North America. In 2009, the company merged with the Schering-Plough Corporation. Through the merger, Schering-Plough acquired all of the shares of Merck & Co., which became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Schering-Plough and was renamed Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp. Schering-Plough continued as the surviving public company and was renamed Merck & Co., Inc.
