The Ray-O-Vac Company was founded on January 17, 1906 by James B. Ramsay, P. W. Strong and Alfred Landau in Madison, Wisconsin. Its industry was batteries and its headquarters were in Madison, Wisconsin (1906-2004), Atlanta, Georgia (2004-2010) and Madison (Middleton), Wisconsin (2010-present).
In 1957 the company was merged into the Electric Storage Battery Company and operated as a division. It was acquired by the International Nickel Company of Canada, Ltd. in 1974, but spun off in 1982 when it was purchased by Thomas Pyle, Robert Goergen and Lionel Sterling. The Thomas H. Lee Partners bought 80% of Rayovac shares in 1996. The company filed for bankruptcy protection in February 2009 and later emerged in August 2009, majorly owned by Harbinger Capital Partners LLC. In 2018 the battery division was sold to Energizer Holdings, Inc. and Spectrum Brands merged with its controlling shareholder, HRG Group, Inc.
