The Royal Typewriter Company was founded on January 26, 1904 by Edward B. Hess and Lewis C. Myers in Brooklyn, New York. Its industry was typewriters and paper shredders and its headquarters were in Brooklyn, New York (1904-1926), Hartford, Connecticut (1926-1982) and Windsor, Connecticut (1982-1986). In 1954, Royal and the McBee Binder Company merged to form Royal McBee. In 1964, Royal McBee was acquired by Litton Industries. In 1979, Volkswagen purchased a 55% stake of the company through its Triumph-Adler North American, Inc. subsidiary. In 1986, part of the firm was sold to Olivetti S.p.A. and the original part to the Konishiruko Photo Industry Company. The latter part became Konica Business Machines U.S.A., Inc.
