The Sargent Engineering Corporation was founded in 1920 by Sumner B. Sargent in Huntington Park, California. Its industry initially involved the manufacturing of specialty tools for the oil industry, later diversifying into aircraft, naval, and space technology components. Its main place of operation was in Huntington Park, California (1920-1990) and Tucson, Arizona (1990-present).

In 1960, the firm was sold to A. J. Industries, Inc., owner of Fletcher Industries, Inc., and Sargent became known as Sargent-Fletcher. Shortly after in 1965, the Sargent operation was acquired by the Electracada Corporation and the corporate identity changed to Sargent Industries. Sargent became a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Dover Corporation in 1985. Its name changed to Sargent Dover in 1987, and its Huntington Park division officially became known as Sargent Controls. In 1988, Sargent Controls moved its aerospace product line to a facility in Yorba Linda, California which became known as Sargent Aerospace. Both divisions were consolidated by Dover in 1993, becoming Sargent Controls & Aerospace. In 2015, Sargent along with its subsidiaries were acquired by RBC Bearings, Inc.
