
The Simmons Company was founded in 1871 (incorporated 1884) by Zalmon G. Simmons in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Its industry is mattresses and its headquarters were in Kenosha, Wisconsin (1871-1923), New York City, New York (1923-1975) and Atlanta, Georgia (1975-present).

In 1979, it was acquired by Gulf & Western Industries. It was then sold to the Wickes Corporation in 1985. A year later, it was purchased by the Wesray Capital Corporation. In 1989, it was given to the employees for ownership. In 1991, Merril Lynch Capital Partners bought a majority stake in Simmons. Investcorp acquired the company in 1996. Two years later, Fenway Partners bought the company and sold it to Thomas E. Lee Partners in 2003. In 2012, it was acquired by Advent International. It has been a subsidiary of Serta Simmons Bedding, LLC since 2022.
