
The Thomas Laughlin Company was founded in 1836 (incorporated 1890) by Thomas S. Laughlin in Portland, Maine. Its industry was marine hardware products and its headquarters remained in Portland, Maine. In March 1955, the firm was acquired by the American Hoist & Derrick Company and was operated as the Crosby-Laughlin Division. In 1971, the Crosby Group, Inc. was spun off from American Hoist and the "Laughlin" brand was eventually dropped.
