The Truth Tool Company was founded in January 1914 by Arthur E. Cowden and Lewis Berg in Ellendale, Minnesota after purchasing the blacksmith shop and business of L. D. Lundahl. Its industry originally blacksmithing for a short-time, before moving on to the full-time manufacturing of hand-forged mechanics' tools for automotive work. By the 1950s, the focus shifted to producing window and door hardware. Its place of operation was in Ellendale, Minnesota (1914-1920), Mankato, Minnesota (1920-1959) and Owatonna, Minnesota (1959-present).

In 1950, the firm was acquired by the Owatonna Tool Company who in turn was purchased by the Sealed Power Corporation in 1985. The Truth Division of Sealed Power was acquired by Fisher Karpark Industries (FKI) plc. in 1993 and placed into its Hardware Group, one of four groups that comprise FKI. In July 2008, Truth was sold to Melrose Industries plc., and again to Tyman plc in July 2013.
