The Van Camp Seafood Company, or Van Camp Sea Food Company, was founded in April 1914 by Frank Van Camp and his son Gilbert in San Diego, California after buying out the California Tuna Canning Company. Its industry was seafood and its headquarters were in San Diego, California (1914-1984), St. Louis, Missouri (1984-1990) and San Diego, California (1990-1999).
In 1963 the firm was acquired by the Ralston Purina Company. A group of private investors from Indonesia under the name P. T. Mantrust Corporation purchased the company in 1988 with financial aid from Prudential-Bache Interfunding, Inc. Van Camp was saved from bankruptcy in 1997 when it was acquired by Tri-Union Seafoods LLC. In 1998 Tri-Union merged with the firm and adopted its name to do business by.
