The Winchester Repeating Arms Company was founded in April 1857 by Oliver F. Winchester after acquiring and reorganizing the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company. Its industry is firearms and ammunition and its headquarters remained in New Haven, Connecticut.

It merged with the Simmons Hardware Company in 1922, creating the Winchester-Simmons Company as a holding firm. It was acquired by the Western Cartridge Company in 1931 after falling into receivership. In 1981, the rights to manufacture Winchester products were acquired by the newly-formed U.S. Repeating Arms Company under license by the Olin Corporation.
